MMQ FAQ
What is methane monster quest? Methane Monster Quest is a public participation platform designed to direct private contributions toward verified methane mitigation projects. Each methane leak targeted by MMQ is a Methane Monster, and stopping the leak means slaying the Monster. Contributors receive public recognition through Hero Leaderboards, Badges and the opportunity to name the Methane Monster they helped slay. Project results are tracked through third-party verification and public reporting. The goal is to create a mechanism that makes reducing methane emissions more visible, engaging and financially supported.
Who is behind MMQ? Methane Monster Quest was created by Kim Miner, a retired educator with a Master’s degree in Creativity in Educational Practices and eLearning. After retiring from teaching, Kim studied business and began researching methane emissions and mitigation. In developing MMQ, she has engaged with researchers, government, policymakers, regulators and industry to better understand the problem and how methane reductions are independently measured and how the work is carried out by qualified professionals. Her background in education helped shape a different approach to the problem: using engagement, motivation and gamification to make methane mitigation accessible to the public and give people a way to participate in solving a real-world problem.
What is a Methane Monster? Each methane leak is a Methane Monster. MMQ aims to slay the monsters by stopping the methane leaks.
Is methane bad? No. Methane is the key component in natural gas. Many homes in Canada are heated by natural gas. Heat in a Canadian winter is a good thing. The problem is methane that leaks from wells into the atmosphere. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. MMQ focuses on stopping those leaks.
Will MMQ be stopping the leaks themselves? No, MMQ's role is to raise funds, encourage public participation, recognize Heroes and publicly report methane reduction results. MMQ directs funds toward verified methane mitigation projects carried out by qualified oil-and-gas professionals who have the expertise, equipment and regulatory approvals required to do the work. Independent methane measuring specialists will measure emissions before and after the mitigation work to verify the results.
